Brand new research by the Vegan Society and Vegan Life Magazine published last week revealed that there are now over half a million vegans in the UK, three and a half times as many as 2006. It’s been hailed as one of the fastest growing lifestyle movements in old Albion. “The public perception of veganism is changing fast. It’s no longer an extreme lifestyle, it’s easy and accessible – you can walk into any supermarket and be greeted by a huge range of dairy-free milks and many more other vegan-friendly products,” commented Keith Coomber, the publishing director of Vegan Life Magazine. He’s right – it’s now easier than ever before to choose vegan products, be it liqueur, food or shoes. Here’s a brief round up of the latest vegan-friendly products to come to market recently.

Baileys is Latest Alcohol Brand to Offer Vegan Range

It’s safe to say the news that Baileys is launching vegan-friendly almond milk liqueur went down a storm in the vegan community. I instantly reserved a very special spot for it in my drinks cabinet. The almond milk in Baileys Almande is made with a mix of sweet almond oil, almond essence, sugar, purified water and vanilla, so it’s completely dairy-free. No doubt it will be at the top of many a vegan Christmas list this year. But this doesn’t just transform the winter months for vegans; Baileys suggest using it in a cheeky summer cocktail with coconut water, or blending it with ice. Metro have said it’s available to buy now, so keep your eyes peeled.

[Updated Monday 6th June] I’ve just heard back from Baileys about where their Almande product is available:

“We can confirm that we have launched a trial in the US of Baileys Almande, a delicious new dairy-free variant. Whilst we aren’t rolling out the trial in Europe just now, we will be watching the results closely to see how consumers respond to this new product. Baileys Almande has been classified as gluten free and dairy free in the US. If the trial is extended to Europe, we will seek classifications in Europe too due to different regulations. We are also seeking vegan certification.”

Pret Launches New Vegan Food

Pret - 1

Picking up vegan food when you’re out and about just got ten times easier. Walking into Pret, it’s refreshing to find a variety of vegan options, and not just one lone pot of edamame beans (although edamame beans are da bomb). You can choose from miso marinated mushroom and avocado sushi salad, the red tapenade and avocado superbowl, the veggie sushi pot or the falafel mezze, and top it all off with a soy latte and a banana. I heartily recommend the mushroom sushi salad – it was bursting with all manner of flavours, so much so that I did have to exercise some self control in not buying a second salad. Afterwards, I popped to Pret’s website to say thanks for this new range, and got a lovely reply from the customer service lady, saying how nice it was to get positive feedback. I think it’s proper important to send a positive email when it’s deserved, and celebrate every small step in the right direction.

Beyond Meat Burger Launches in US Whole Foods

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 15.41.57

Dubbed ‘the veggie burger that bleeds’, the new plant-based burger Beyond Meat has attracted the likes of Bill Gates, which (very excitingly) implies that he sees vegan brands as the best brands to invest in right now. If meat-eaters took to this burger and it caught on and became a huge sensation, then it would save animal lives, and that’s just awesome. Anything that is made without harming animals gets a thumbs up from me.
